3Helix Power provides consulting, analysis, engineering and design services for small, low head hydropower projects and has completed the design of nearly 40 low head, Archimedes screw type, hydropower systems ranging from 30 kW to nearly 300 kW. 3Helix Power designs system in the 1 to 10 meter head range and is focused primarily on Archimedes screw technology – the preferred hydropower technology of the English Environment Agency because of its environmental and fish friendly nature. Archimedes screw hydropower systems are extremely efficient and retain a high efficiency in cases of varying water levels. Additionally, variable speed Archimedes screw systems can operate down to as low as 5% of the design flow. Independent studies have found that in many instances, Archimedes screws are more cost effective solutions than traditional low head turbines (Kaplan or Francis). Consulting and Analysis Services include: Site visits and discussion of requirements Measurements of structures and waterways Desktop assessment of available water and preliminary estimates of energy potential Feasibility studies Engineering and Design Services include: Develop more detailed estimates of power and energy capability Direct topographic survey work Develop complete system designs and operational concepts. Create 3D model and drawings of systems including the immediate environment to provide context (can provide annotated, animated videos of design concepts)
