In 2014, two people attempted to summit all 46 Adirondack High Peak mountains during the week of National Suicide Prevention Week (9/8 to 9/14) to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Due to weather and wildlife challenges, they did not summit all 46 High Peaks. However, they were successful in raising $14,500 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Now, 46 Climbs has grown into an annual event during Suicide Prevention Week where individuals can sign up to hike/ climb something challenging and raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Our goal, as our tag line states, is to achieve positive altitude. Through climbing we hope to symbolize the struggle and conquering of depression and suicide. From personal experiences we have seen the effects that suicide and depression holds over an individual and those who care for them. We hope that the continuation of this event will bring this issue to light and help those struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts get the help they need, as well as create a positive outlet for the type of spiritual healing one can only find in the mountains. To date, 46Climbs has raised over for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and our participants have climbed the equivalent elevation gain of 130x Mt. Everest.
