Kelvin Tool Changer is a new end-effector exchange system for small collaborative robots. With this tool changer the robot can be programed to switch between different tools. This will give a higher flexibility of the robot in a production line. One robot will be able to do more different tasks and make automation with robots more profitable in low volume productions. The elimination of time wasted on changing the production setup will make it easy to handle low volume – high mix production. Small batch sizes can be produced efficiently. The tool shifting process is solely done by the movement of the robot arm. The tool changer is designed to be use where humans are working closely together with robots. There are no sharp corners or external connectors that may be a hazard if the robot arm collides with an operator. The Kelvin tool changer is based on a simple but very precise connection. This gives a very high repeatability when tools are replaced on the robot. The tool changer consists of a Master Plate that is mounted at the end of the robot arm, some Tool Plates, mounted with different tools, and some Docking Stations for parking tools. The tool changer is designed to be use where humans are working closely together with robots. The tool changer has build in connectors for electricity, signals and pneumatic canals. These connectors are placed inside the tool changer, well away from the user. The power supply to the tool is only connected when a tool is locked to the robot arm. The tool changer is designed for automatic use but can easily be manual operated by the user. When a tool is connected to the Master Plate it is possible to check a build in ID for the Tool.
