8 Sum Pi

I have always been an educator. I just didn’t know IT. In school I wouldn’t let kids copy my work but I would show them how I did IT. In college, I would be the guy in the group who would make sure everyone could explain IT. I didn’t always get IT but when I did, I wanted to share IT. After college I went to work at a big company and I was always making sure coworkers knew how to do IT. After that I worked on my own for a long time I started to feel I was missing IT. When I went back to school to study Math I found IT again. I decided to start teaching so I could do IT all the time. Teaching has been the hardest and most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. I have taught 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade and have leaned a few lessons: Relationships are everything - Students learn best from someone who they like and who cares about them. Learning should be meaningful - Students should understand how what they are learning relates to them and their interests. Meet them where they are - Students, especially in math, do much better when they have a firm grasp on the fundamentals. Students learn differently - Students learn in many ways. Some students learn starting with the concept and then moving to the details while some students want to get right to the formulas. Some really benefit from using their hands while others really want to see it. It is my job to tailor lessons to each student so that they get the most out of it.
