Students' access to college or university often finds itself hampered by the obstacles of standardized assessments. North Texas families are all too familiar with the rigors of standardized testing - STAAR, AP, EoC, TSI. They are also familiar with how there tends to be a gap between the student's grades and their Test Scores. This gap undoubtedly creates anxiety and despair for the student and frustration for the parents. What is required is a complete rethink of how students should approach these tests. Unfortunately, most tutoring options favor an outdated "stand-and-deliver" approach of death-by-worksheet and "drill, baby drill" while promising the parents an improvement of a few points. That incremental uptick, however, often reflects little more than an increased familiarity with the Exam and not an increase in the students' testing abilities. Not to mention, that this approach assumes all students are the same and process information in a way that is formulaic and responsive to the franchise-style one-size-fits-all curriculum. As most parents and teachers know - not all students thrive in those rigid assembly-line style classrooms.
