A new paradigm in college admissions. 21 years ago I received a call from Vice Dean Anjani Jain at the Wharton School that changed my life. Taking a radical step away from my early career as an entrepreneur and VC investor, I decided to take a “sabbatical” and serve as the Director of MBA Admissions and Financial Aid at my alma mater, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. During my time at Wharton I realized that I loved admissions, and the complex, three-dimensional challenge it presented that was unique for every student. In 2008 I founded Global Education Opportunities, which (among other things) focused on admissions consulting. I’ve been running this as a boutique, bespoke service for 17 years now, working with students from around the world and helping them achieve their educational goals. I’ve tried several times to expand the business, but it never felt right. The traditional “me too” approach of hiring more consultants seemed unoriginal and cost-prohibitive to many families, and there was no compelling differentiator or value proposition. Until now.
