Adopt A Forest (AAF) champions the establishment of sustainable forestry in arid and semi-arid areas (ASALs), making up 89% of Kenya. We believe in proper post-planting management of trees to guarantee at least a 97% survival rate. ASALs areas of Kenya have the lowest forest and tree cover, standing at below 4%. We cannot discuss climate change adaptation, mitigation, and food security when leaving out 80% of the country. Our clarion call is for stakeholders to "ADOPT FORESTS"; this means caring for and nurturing planted trees for three years to ensure they survive and grow into healthy, valuable crops. Trees, like all crops, need good management, site preparation, soil assessment, quality seedling, watering, weeding, physical protection, and pest and disease control. Poor post-planting management of tree seedlings reduces the survival rate significantly. According to World-Agroforestry-ICRAF, unmanaged trees have less than a 30% chance of survival, while 35% of the lucky ones are at risk of being stunted and sickly. The survival rate is even lower ASALs because of unsupportive weather and poverty. Our business model is guided by research and years of interactions with ASAL regions. Adopting a tree for three years is $5 (World Wildlife Fund WWF). The high-cost calls for innovative ways of raising funds. Only 11% of climate change adaptation funds in Kenya are available (UNEP 2022, & Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) 2020). Forests are valuable economic resources if used sustainably: agroforestry, carbon credits, land restoration, pulp, medicine, timber, and fodder. Our model encourages a shift from tree-planting donations to forest assets. We want to incentivize people and companies by offering them a return on investment.
