Alamad-Ngo

Alamad' means 'learning' in Tamashek, the language of the Tuareg people of the Sahara. Alamad is an NGO promoting nomadic womens and girl's education programs in Niger and the Sahara. Niger, in West Africa, is ranked as one of the least developed countries in the world. Large parts of the country is covered by the Sahara and Tenere while most of the country is considered dry sahel climate. The nomadic Tuareg people live mainly in the north in a subsistence lifestyle. Since a rebellion between 2007-2010 has stopped the tourism industry to the Air Mountains and many of the tourist locations are still dangerous with uncleared landmines, the local people have little commerce opportunities. The huge uranium mines in the north provide little benefit to local populations. Whilst the Niger government, UN and donor countries are helping with the immediate food crisis there is little to educate the population and break the poverty cycle.
