Founded in 2019, AltrixBio is based on research by Jeff Karp, PhD, and Ali Tavakkoli, MD, of Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School. Inspired by the rapid resolution of type 2 diabetes following bariatric surgery, they modified sucralfate—a therapy with over 40 years of clinical use—to replicate these metabolic benefits, creating AJN003, a proprietary, bio-engineered, once-daily oral therapy. AJN003 forms a temporary barrier in the stomach, duodenum, and jejunum, altering nutrient sensing to trigger a metabolic reset. Preclinical data show it improves insulin resistance and key metabolic hormones (GLP-1, GIP, ghrelin, leptin), driving improved glycemic control and weight loss. As a small molecule with no systemic exposure, AJN003 offers a novel, patent-protected approach to treating type 2 diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic diseases.
