Arandis Power

Natura Energy was the original founder and majority shareholder of the special purpose vehicle Arandis Power (Pty) Ltd, established in 2011 for the development of a thermal power generation facility in Namibia. Under Natura Energy’s leadership, the project advanced through all key development stages—engineering, permitting, procurement, and financing—evolving into one of the most innovative power initiatives of its time in the Southern African region: a fully integrated hybrid power plant combining Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) and solar PV technologies, designed to deliver baseload power to Namibia’s national utility, NamPower. Initially developed in partnership with Copperbelt Energy Corporation (Zambia) and Scatec (Norway), and later joined by StanLib Asset Management (South Africa) and Wärtsilä (Finland) as equity partners, the plant was engineered to supply approximately 20% of Namibia’s national baseload electricity requirements. The design featured seven HFO generators, each with a capacity of 17MW and weighing over 350 tonnes, complemented by 45MW of solar PV capacity used exclusively to offset fuel consumption and enhance CO2 efficiency. Despite initial support, NamPower ultimately withdrew from in international procurement process, which was later found to have been flawed. Following legal proceedings, the Supreme Court of Namibia issued a favourable judgment in favour of Arandis Power and its shareholder, Natura Energy. In 2022, Natura Energy divested its land rights interest in the project but retained all associated intellectual property rights and know-how developed during the initiative.
