Area 61 closed permanently 12/29/24 due to rising costs related to downtown leases. The gallery hosted and sold original works from a diverse collection by 30 professional local artists & craftsmen. The space celebrated the artists’ creative spirits, cultivated collectors & friendships through a shared love of art that will live on. We’ll continue to share Local Arts & Artists’ Updates here… History of the gallery: Area 61 Gallery was established in 2009 by master wood craftsmen David Crewe and Rudd Montgomery as a space to show and sell their work. Gifted friends and local artists were invited to join the space as the vision expanded to support local artists and craftsmen in a quest to promote local art as a sustainable business and career. The gallery features the work of 20+ professional local artists & craftsmen and includes hand-crafted furniture, woodwork, fine art, sculpture, jewelry, pottery, handcrafted audio speakers by SoundCrewe and much more. Area 61 gallery piloted the revitalization of the downtown Chattanooga historic Southside district at 61 E. Main Street—which inspired the name “area 61”. In 2017, as the Southside evolved to residential, dining & entertainment, our gallery owners and artist community decided to relocate closer to out-of-town guests who love collecting local art when they travel.
