Baba is a uniquely Malaysian ethnicity born of the cultural fusion of two elegant and extraordinary people – the Malay and the Chinese. This well-known and much-loved bit of the Malaysian history tells of an exotic Chinese princess from the famed Ming Dynasty, Hang Li Po, who arrived in Malacca in the 15th century to wed the legendary ruler, Sultan Mansor Shah. Accompanying the princess was a 500-strong entourage of Chinese officials and merchants who had, over time, settled down and intermarried with the local Malay women. Thus, a new culture known as the Baba & Nyonya was born. As illustrious descendants, the Baba inherited a unique blend of two cultures, which embodies the pragmatism and diligence of the Chinese as well as the romanticism and harmonious lifestyle of the Malays. This wonderful synthesis of culture is celebrated in every aspect, from furniture, costumes and cuisine to dialect and lifestyle, even to this day. We name our beautifully crafted flower pots “Baba” in tribute to the Baba and Nyonya, one of the most unique cultures in the world.
