The Townshend family has been a trusted name in the Hawke's Bay Motor Industry for over 60 years. Charlie Townshend, Rob's father, was a key figure until his sudden passing in 1987. In 1985, at just 19, Rob Townshend began his career in Motor Vehicle Sales at Townshend Motors. His talent and industry knowledge grew rapidly over the next five years. In June 1990, three years after his father's death, Rob established Bayswater Vehicles on Carlyle Street in Napier. Despite initial skepticism due to his youth and inexperience, Rob’s perseverance led to significant growth. Over 30 years, Bayswater Vehicles expanded considerably, with notable growth in Franchised Brands, Vehicle Parts and Servicing Departments, and strong support from the Bayswater Family. The Bayswater Vehicle Group now includes eight dealerships, including locations adjacent to Carlyle Street, Stortford Lodge, Heretaunga Street, and Karamu Road North in Hastings, as well as Manawatu BMW in Palmerston North. The group has also added brands beyond Hyundai and Subaru, now offering Isuzu, Suzuki, Nissan, BYD, MG, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Audi, Volkswagen, and Skoda. Rob, with co-Director Mel Chan, takes great pride in the group's success and expansion. They have built a dedicated team and honor Rob’s mother and former shareholder, Dot Townshend, who significantly contributed until her passing in July 2021.
