Beyond Outrage

Beyond Outrage is a women led organization, and is governed by and with feminist principles and values. It works in Eastern Africa, contributing to a safer digital space for the realization of human rights, democracy, and social justice. Beyond Outrage seeks to guard the digital space from being increasingly misused, by state and non-state actors, through misinformation, cyber bullying, harassment and intimidation of activists, etc. It also seeks to increase access to digital spaces by the marginalized, particularly women, sexual minorities, sexual and reproductive rights activists, and young people generally. Beyond Outrage plays a catalytic role in creating linkages among digital space actors in the human rights, democracy, and social justice fields through curating conversations and incentivizing collaboration, for example between digital activists and apps developers. It also plays a disruptive role in the use of digital spaces. Beyond Outrage seeks to be a civil society organization with legitimacy because of the issues it addresses, the way it is funded, and transparent ways in which it is run; this is also its wish of civil society broadly. For Beyond Outrage, being disruptive means that the organization is bold, speaks truth to power, asks questions all the time, learns and reflects, is not afraid of failure, introduces new approaches, and considers all ideas without a hierarchy. Beyond Outrage will be both disruptive and collaborative; these two approaches can and should go together. The name ‘Beyond Outrage’ conveys the organization’s conviction that people ought to be outraged by the things that are wrong in society – corruption, stolen elections, gender based violence, discrimination of gender and sexual minorities, poverty etc. Equally importantly, and urgently, people must move beyond being outraged and expressing online and offline their outrage to being actively engaged in one way or another to address the things that outrage them.
