Biomembretics is a preclinical biomedical company focused on the development of 3D microfluidic technology that mimics the blood path of human lungs to transform the performance, safety, and versatility of artificial lung therapy. More than 2 million patients with lung failure are treated with mechanical ventilators every year. But ventilators are often ineffective, cause damage to the lungs, and require prolonged sedation and immobility. Artificial lung devices have emerged as a promising alternative, but problems related to the artificial structure of the device filters (membranes) have impeded more widespread adoption by hospitals. Specifically, current membranes cause damage and clotting in the blood, leading to life-threatening complications, the need for dangerous blood thinner medications, poor patient outcomes, and high costs. The patented 3D microfluidic membrane technology will improve performance and eliminate the blood damage and clotting. These advantages will decrease complications and improve survival, increase the number of patients whom hospitals could treat with artificial lung devices instead of mechanical ventilators, and reduce the related monitoring, medication, and complication-driven costs for hospitals. The product is currently in preclinical development in collaboration with strategic partners, and has been validated by robust in vitro and large animal models. It has not yet been FDA approved for human use.
