Endodontics is the dental specialty involving the pulp (more commonly called the 'root canal') of a tooth, and the associated diseases of it and the bone surrounding teeth. Endodontists are dentists with more than three years of advanced training in root canal techniques and procedures after dental school. Because they limit their practice to endodontic cases, they have concentrated experience in all endodontic therapies. In addition to treating routine non-surgical root canal therapy cases, they are experts in performing both complicated root canal retreatments and surgical root canal procedures, such as apicoectomy with root end filling. Essentially, an endodontist is a specialist in saving teeth that would otherwise require extraction.
