An insight on the history associated with our expertise comprises of a process perfected around 50 years ago whereby brickwork could be tinted in a rather more scientific manner, adding a new dimension to remedial tinting within the construction industry. The tints are a suspension to of insoluble mineral/synthetic pigments usually metallic oxides in a clear liquid base. The colouring agents are resistant to U.V. light and most chemicals (with the exception of strong acids) and are all to BS1014 (1975). When applied the low viscosity of the tints allows penetration into the substrate with little or no effect upon the surface texture and the formulation of the liquid medium, which is a water based potassium silicate, ensures adhesion of the pigments by forming insoluble micro-silicate bonds in a process known as silification. Nevertheless the success of a tinting operation is only partially due to the selection of correct materials. The skill of the technician in applying those materials is of prime importance. Consequently all Building Cosmetic Services’ personnel are directly employed and trained to the highest level in the matching and applying of masonry tints.
