Carleton University Earth Sciences
The study of earth sciences involves investigations of how our planet (and beyond) works and why. The Earth Sciences offer an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to understanding Earth by applying knowledge from biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics to tackle complex issues. The Department of Earth Sciences at Carleton University offers 11 different programs tailored to many different subdisciplines. Most of our programs are designed so that upon graduation students will be eligible for a Professional Geoscientist in Ontario (PGO) designation. Earth Scientists are in high demand and most of our graduates land high paying jobs in the field. Faculty and students in the Department of Earth Sciences are actively engaged in cutting edge research in a wide array of subdisciplines including climate change, economic geology, environmental earth sciences, geochemistry, applied geophysics, hydrogeology, micropaleontology, mineralogy, paleoecology, paleolimnology, petrology, planetary geology, sedimentology and vertebrate paleontology. Both graduate and undergraduate students benefit from our membership in the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Center (OCGC), which is a joint research-intensive collaboration with the University of Ottawa and the Geological Survey of Canada. Students not only benefit from being able to take courses with a wide array of faculty with diverse expertise, but they also have the potential opportunity to carry out research with OCGC members in their laboratories using cutting-edge instrumentation.
