Wells is an ideal base for touring the West Country, with Wookey Hole Caves, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury, Regency Bath, Bristol and the seaside resort of Weston-Super-Mare all in close proximity. For those who like to get some exercise there is excellent walking in the nearby Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the West Mendip Way starts just half a mile from St Thomas Mews with cycling and bird watching on the Somerset Levels. Sporting facilities in the area include racing at Wincanton and Bath, golf at Wells and near Oakhill, sailing or fishing at Chew Valley and Blagdon lakes. In addition, there is a Leisure Centre in Wells offering a variety of recreational facilities.
