CBI Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd (formerly the partnership of Campbell, Bernstein & Irving) began as a specialist water and wastewater practice in 1944. It expanded in the 1950s to include structural, electrical and mechanical engineering, plus architecture and quantity surveying for several years. CBI's specialist industrial department focused on the civil, structural and building services aspects of heavy industrial projects and was recognized as the leading civil engineering consultancy in the Pulp & Paper Industry in South Africa. On 1 March 2012, CBI — along with its staff and records — was acquired by PDNA Consulting Engineers. The merger details are archived at: From 1 July 2013, PDNA became part of the international Mott MacDonald Group. Mott continued to operate in South Africa with the industrial expertise acquired through CBI. However, Mott's management was unable to sustain the level of service that CBI's former clients had come to expect, and sold its South African operations to Malani Padayachee & Associates on 3 August 2020. By then, a significant portion of the original "CBI team" had left and are now independently active in the same specialised sector.
