In 1980, Paul Dow, Art teacher, and Boonville Public School’s only educator of color’s position was in danger of elimination due to proposed budget cuts. As a result, a group of concerned citizens came together and went door-to-door raising public awareness and mobilizing community support to secure Mr. Dow’s position. After successfully achieving this goal, these citizens realized much more needed to be accomplished, thereby founding the Concerned Citizens for the Black Community (CCBC). Its original mission, “To seek and organize activities of educational and recreational natures in the community which will enhance the quality of life in the community.” Thus starting an over three-decade history of developing and providing educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities for every segment of Boonville’s community. In 2011, the organization’s official name was changed to the Concerned Citizens for a Better Community. Despite its past success, like many volunteer organizations, the CCBC experienced a decline in membership and participation, resulting in a temporary shutdown of its normal operations in March 2014. In May 2014, an Interim Board of Directors was appointed to identify and fulfill the most immediate objectives necessary stabilize and revitalize this organization. The Interim Board of Directors recognized several important goals necessary in doing so. In August 2014, the official Board of Directors of the CCBC was elected and have since move forward in providing numerous educational and recreational activities for youth and adults, in addition to, establishing and reestablishing partnerships in its efforts to serve Boonville and its surrounding communities well into the future.
