Charles H. Cecil Studios

Charles H. Cecil Studios, a private atelier, offers a rigorous training in the practice and tradition of drawing and painting from life. In keeping with the atelier tradition, Charles H. Cecil closely follows the student’s progress from the first cast and figure drawings to advanced portraiture in oils. Students are taught the sight‑size method whereby the image and subject are placed side by side at a distance in order to perceive the whole. Sight-size as a portrait technique was used extensively by John Singer Sargent and his contemporaries, while its origins lie in the practice of Titian, Van Dyck and Velázquez.
