Chawathil First Nation

Situated in the breathtaking Fraser Valley, the Chawathil First Nation boasts a resplendent mountain setting that has been home to its people for millennia. Nestled within what is now known as the community of Hope and its environs, Chawathil's rich history and vibrant culture stem from deep roots in this land. For centuries, the bountiful natural resources of their territory have not only sustained the Chawathil people but also nurtured a communal lifestyle deeply respectful of elders and Knowledge Holders. As Sto:lo, or "river people," their existence and prosperity are intricately tied to the land and waterways, relying on the Fraser River and its surroundings for survival and sustenance. Unified by the Halq’emeylem language of the Coast Salish family, the Chawathil have historically thrived through fishing, hunting, and gathering, leveraging the land's abundance to support their way of life. This tradition continues today, with a steadfast commitment to utilizing these resources for both economic and traditional purposes. The Chawathil First Nation champions progress through a unique blend of tradition and innovation. By adopting a Land Code and establishing a separate economic development corporation, they skillfully navigate the separation of business and politics. Collaborating with the District of Hope, the Fraser Valley Regional District, and like-minded organizations, Chawathil is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for its members and forging paths toward mutual prosperity.
