Community Energy Malawi

Licensed mini-grid developer, operator | Renewable energy technologies supplier/installer | Community energy policy advocate with trail blazing initiatives in Malawi’s remote areas benefiting thousands in 17 districts of Malawi. Its work has been featured in local and international media like BBC and Reuters. Incorporated on 22nd December 2014, CEM was formed as an output of the Community Energy Development Programme (CEDP) which implemented 46 projects comprising 103 different systems on solar lighting for health facilities, schools, teacher houses, Community Based Organizations’ (CBO) offices, solar potable water pumping stations, and clean cooking centers, benefiting people in 12 districts. CEM was a shortlisted project in the ASDHEN 2022 Energy Access Skills International Award. In identifying project impact areas, CEM uses its criteria which focusses on remote areas where people are marginalized and have limited options. CEM was established with a mission to help Malawian communities to implement sustainable renewable energy solutions that help to meet their energy needs. It seeks to create a carbon neutral, resilient and transformed socio-economic environment in which men, women, boys and girls achieve their full potential catalysed by energy to increase their life chances. CEM recognizes that energy is an enabler and access to clean energy interlinks with the attainment of several other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
