Adults with developmental disabilities in Washington face worsening housing insecurity as the state’s affordable housing crisis deepens. Rising rents, low vacancy rates, and decades of underproduction have created a landscape where safe, stable housing is out of reach for many. Over half of adults with DD in our region live with aging caregivers. Most rely on fixed incomes and need live-in support with daily routines, life skills, and meaningful connection. Yet these services are often unavailable or unaffordable. Families are left to navigate limited housing and care options with little or no support. Too often, housing options meet only physical needs—overlooking the importance of emotional connection, skill building, and social belonging. This creates environments where independence is stifled, relationships are shallow, and stability is fragile. Since 1995, Community Homes has created stable, community-based housing where adults with developmental disabilities can live rich, full lives. We own and operate 11 adult family homes and shared living homes across King County, Washington, providing safe, sustainable housing for more than 50 residents. Each home is thoughtfully designed by matching residents with compatible housemates and compassionate live-in caregivers who offer personalized support. Located in local neighborhoods, our households help residents build independence, connect with their communities, and feel a sense of belonging. At Community Homes, we believe that home is the center and community makes it happen. We currently operate ten Adult Family Homes and Shared Living Homes on the eastside and in Shoreline, with three new homes opened in the past five years. We know the need is great and we aspire to keep growing.
