Caulking is critical because cracks and joints that extend down into and through your concrete can allow water to enter the space beneath the surface, leading to damaged concrete by washing away the soil (which supports your concrete), ultimately causing the concrete to crack and/or sink. It's also important to seal concrete, because salt is one of concrete’s worst enemies, unfortunately, salt is also one of the favored means of removing snow and ice from roads. It’s not uncommon to see pitting or spalling on your concrete caused by winter ice salt treatment, applied to help keep you safe from slipping.
