Conserwa

Conserwa is a European Horizon project that tackles the challenge of managing weeds in a more agroecological way. Challenge 1: The adoption of agroecological weed management practices has been slower than expected, despite knowledge of their benefits. The project aims to enhance understanding of the benefits and optimize the application of these practices in various scenarios. Challenge 2: Farmers have been hesitant to adopt agroecological practices due to barriers such as inadequate policy instruments, a lack of market mechanisms, and limited social infrastructure for learning and decision-making. CONSERWA plans to overcome these obstacles and support farmers in implementing agroecological combinations by providing tools for performance measurement and impact assessment. Challenge 3: With increasing CO2 levels and climate change, controlling weeds reliably with herbicides may become more challenging. However, the implications of climate change on non-chemical weed management tactics within agroecology have not been thoroughly addressed. The project aims to study this aspect and develop strategies suitable for future climate scenarios. The project will conduct case studies covering various European biogeographical and pedo-climatic regions, encompassing a wide range of crops and farming systems. It also emphasizes the importance of farmer training and policy recommendations to drive sustainable weed management practices.
