Constitutional Law Centre

The Constitutional Law Centre (CLC) is an advocacy group that brings together diverse individuals and organisations to promote, explain and defend the constitution, constitutionalism and the rule of law in Zimbabwe and the region. It is founded on the belief that knowledge is essential to the realisation of citizens’ duties to promote and defend the constitution. The CLC seeks to promote knowledge of the constitution among citizens so that they have the tools and incentives to use it and also defend it against erosion. We recognise that the constitution is the supreme law of the country and that it is the product of society’s collective imagination. This collective imagination is a set of values, principles and rules that depend on collective belief. It requires believers who support, promote and defend it in all spaces of society. The CLC seeks to generate material and tools to empower believers and agents of constitutionalism and the rule of law. In this regard, the CLC is also founded in the spirit of section 7 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe which encapsulates the state’s duty to promote the constitution. It includes the duty of all persons and organisations to disseminate awareness and knowledge of the constitution throughout society. The CLC is designed to create material that will promote awareness and knowledge of the constitution at all levels of society. We are dedicated to promoting a culture of constitutionalism, a substantive version of the rule of law, including nurturing norms that are essential to developing a more open and just society based on democratic values and principles. We are a team of committed social justice activists, policy experts, constitutional lawyers, human rights and democracy advocates dedicated to promoting an open society built on the foundations of constitutionalism and a substantive rule of law. We are dedicated to crafting and using innovative ways to tackle the challenge of promoting and defending the constitution.
