COPESSA is an award-winning community-based social profit organisation. we are registered as a Section-21 company, a Section 18A public benefit organisation (PBO) and a non-profit organisation (NPO). The first walk-in centre opened in 2004, in Protea Glen, Soweto. COPESSA came into being as result of many consultive "indabas", led by a group of celebrated women, including the now late Dr Sibongile Khumalo, called ISililo -"A women's Cry Campaign". this campaign followed the brutal rape of " Baby Tshepang"(not her real name). Although our intial focus was on the prevention of violence against children, we have since expanded our services to include the prevention of violence against women (VAW). This holistic approach follows emerging international research about the intersection of VAC and VAW, research which was also confirmed in our community."No man is an island" and "it takes a village to raise a child". We at COPESSA are always working hard to build partnerships e.g. Wits school of Public Health and Gauteng Department of Social Development. We are also involved in international research on Domestic Abuse during Covid-19, Our Mission We prevent VAC and VAW by:* Mobilising communities * Creating supportive environments for women and children, both within their homes and the general community *Promoting Social and behaviour change * Giving psycho-social support to survivors of violence, and *Engaging in and promoting community participatory research.
