Cortexo has developed energy monitoring software that helps energy users make smarter decisions about their use of power. These decisions help them save money, achieve more efficient use of energy and have less impact on the environment. Our goal is to put some ‘smart’ into the smart meters that are being rolled out all over New Zealand. By putting information into the hands of customers, we believe they can make better energy decisions that benefit themselves, the energy infrastructure and the environment generally. What we seek to deliver with the Cortexo service is our promise that knowledge is less power. Cortexo takes data from smart meters, appliances and devices at individual homes, and presents this information in a simple form that customers can understand and act on. For example, some customers have worked out that leaving an electricity hungry device like a spa on constantly uses less power overall than turning it off and on when it is being used. We believe by delivering that data to customers, it not only helps them use energy more efficiently, but provide benefits to all other parts of the electricity value chain. Energy retailers like the service because it promotes loyalty and attachment from customers, reducing their ‘churn’. For generators and the transmission network, the Cortexo service results in less load on the system and will, in future developments, manage load right down to a consumer’s individual appliances.
