Crisis Chaplaincy
Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy's mission is to be a light in the depth of pain and a hope in the day to day for first responders, individuals, and the community. First Responders are supported in the depth of pain when tragedy occurs. Chaplains support first responders during and following crisis calls (homicides, suicide, fire/traffic fatalities, drownings, and other unexpected deaths). First responder stations are provided with a chaplain and receive ongoing care and support in the day to day through station visits, shared meals, ride-alongs, phone calls, and text messages. This work is essential. More first responders die by suicide than in the line of duty. In addition, fire and EMS first responders have a suicide contemplation rate nearly 10 times more than America adults who are not first responders. Individuals are supported in their depth of pain on crisis scenes following the traumatic and unexpected death of a loved one. Survivors aren’t alone. Over the following days, weeks, and months, survivors are cared for by a trained volunteer and given access to psychological first aid, support groups, and a listening ear. Many of these remarkable volunteers are also survivors of traumatic loss and all provide hope in the day to day. Caring for surviving loved one is essential, as a survivor grieving the loss of a loved one is 65% more likely to commit suicide if the loved one died by suicide opposed to natural causes. People who have lost a loved one to suicide are invited and encouraged to attend Survivors of Suicide Support Group. Chaplains attend community meetings and walks where strained community relationships run generations deep. Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy chaplains are an essential, non-threatening bridge connecting law enforcement and underserved community members. In the day to day, parades and festivities are attended by chaplains. Networking groups, ceremonies, and government meetings receive inclusive prayer.
