DarkBlack takes bio-waste and converts it to biochar, locking in carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. We are one of the UK’s first active biochar producers, leading the way with this transformative technology, creating certified carbon credits and helping to address man-made climate change. Biochar production has three climate-positive impacts: • Certified carbon credits that corporates can buy to support their journey to net-zero • A carbon-enriched additive (biochar) that enhances soil fertility and resilience, and reduces the need for expensive, carbon-negative fertilizers • Renewable energy as a bi-product. • Biochar as a carbon reduction technology • Carbon is in a constant cycle: trees and plants draw it down from the atmosphere to create cells; when they die or are harvested, organic matter breaks down and carbon is released back into the atmosphere. Breaking this cycle and locking carbon into physical forms that do not decay is one readily available way to permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere and help to address man-made climate change. Instead of allowing organic matter to decompose naturally, we take that matter and subject it to high temperature in an oxygen-depleted environment – a process called pyrolysis. The process permanently changes the structure of the carbon within organic matter, locking it in and preventing its release into the atmosphere through decay. The output from pyrolysis is a substance called biochar, which be used as either an agricultural soil enhancer or as an industrial additive.
