David Scott School

The David Scott School (DSS) is a Special Assistance independent senior secondary school in Frankston, Victoria, supporting young people who have been marginalised from the mainstream education system. Established in 2017, DSS centres on the stories, lived experiences, strengths, and aspirations of its students to transform their educational journey. Recognising that educational connectedness is a key determinant of life opportunities, DSS aims to challenge the negative associations many young people have with schooling, break down barriers to success, and support them in completing their secondary education. The school adopts a personalised approach that integrates wellbeing, accredited education, and career and pathway support, helping to broaden aspirations and create pathways to further education, meaningful employment, and engaged citizenship. DSS students come from diverse backgrounds, often carrying complex experiences of trauma, disconnection, or challenges with traditional schooling. The school tailors its approach to meet individual needs, fostering a supportive environment where every student is valued for their unique strengths and abilities. Certain student cohorts are overrepresented at DSS, requiring specific attention and care. These include: Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students LGBTIQA+ young people Students with mental health challenges Those with experiences of family violence, homelessness, or insecure housing Students facing financial hardship or employment challenges Young people with out-of-home care experiences or caregiving responsibilities. At DSS, young people are supported to reconnect with education, realise their potential, and build purposeful and connected futures.
