Department Of Materials And Ceramics Engineering - University Of Aveiro

The Department of Materials and Ceramics Engineering (DEMaC) adopted this designation in 2012, succeeding the Department of Ceramics and Glass Engineering. The latter was created in 1976, with the aim of responding to the needs arising from the technological development required by the manufacturing process of ceramic and vitreous products. Its creation at the University of Aveiro stemmed from the fact that this region is traditionally rich in the production of ceramic articles. The Degree in Ceramic and Glass Engineering was jointly created. The current production of ceramics and glass is not limited to traditional products with a high manufacturing tonnage (bricks, flooring, bathroom fixtures, bottles, etc.), which are so well known to the general public. The world of modern ceramic materials today includes many other products essential for the development of advanced technologies (substrates and components for the electronics industry, prostheses for medicine, materials with high mechanical resistance for cutting and grinding machines, etc.). However, the range of materials and applications under study has been extended to include metals, plastics and combinations of materials of different nature (so-called composites), capable of responding to the most demanding requests. The creation of the Degree in Materials Engineering, in operation since 1990/1991, consolidated the expansion. The scientific activity carried out in the Department has deserved special emphasis, as illustrated by recent evaluations, the significant number of publications at an international level, the vast number of national and international scientific projects and the large number of national and foreign researchers who seek it out. The research unit to which the DEMaC teachers are associated saw the quality of its work recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, when it was awarded the status of Associated Laboratory (CICECO).
