For over 20 years dhp11 have been contracted by organisations such as Network Rail to develop mapping and engineering software. In 2016 we completed Technology Strategy Board (now Innovate UK) Project No: 101708 'Digitally Enabling Electrification' with our partners Atkins, Laing O'Rourke and Imperial College. This project gave us the confidence to develop a follow-on project called 3DIEE (3D Immersive Engineering Environment) to apply the lessons learned to other areas. 3DIEE uses gaming technology and modern LIDAR scanning techniques to create a "digital twin" for infrastructure design and planning. The digital twin is used by all stakeholders (site owners, designers, engineers and the public) to see and modify the proposed site in 3D in real-time. We have completed over 380 pilot sites for MNOs (Mobile Network Operators) including Vodafone, EE and Sprint. The pilots allowed us to refine our survey and modelling techniques and demonstrate the cost savings achievable by designing, planning and maintaining a site in a full 3D environment.
