Dididai

Dididai is a non-profit NGO based in Spain working for the human rights of people with disabilities, specially their right to access personalised education, health and therapy programmes, and having their emotional, social and dignity needs met. Dididai has always operated in Nepal. Currently Dididai proudly supports a non-profit Nepali organisation working across the country successfully providing therapies and education for disabled children. One of their strengths is training parents to be able to support their children, empowering families towards autonomy. From 2010 to 2020 we worked with a group of disabled residents in a children's home in Kathmandu, deemed "uneducable" by the management of the organisation. When we met them, most lived without necessary specialised support or even acceptable levels of stimulation and social engagement, spending their time doing nothing. With Dididai’s support, those children attended lessons on a small special school, in one of the rooms of the building, staffed and resourced by our NGO. They also received physiotherapy. Their quality of life, engagement and dignity significantly increased. They were much healthier, related to others, enjoyed their daily routine, accessed personalised education, participated in motivating activities and were part of their community. In 2018, thanks to the support of other Nepali and Spanish organisations, Dididai took the lead in erecting a modern purpose-built school on the ample grounds of the children's home, designed with the pupils' strengths and needs in mind. Despite our efforts, once the school was completed these children were never able to make use of their new learning environment, or ever have any more lessons, as the organisation running the home decided suddenly to sever all ties with Dididai in 2020. We are however happy to be able to continue to support Nepali kids with disabilities through a dedicated and trustworthy organisation with a sound work ethic.
