Directed Manufacturing is now Cumberland. Same original location in Pflugerville. The DM description below was written in about 2010 when the LI profile was created. The company has been maintained for historical perspective for the contribution to metal additive manufacturing. Many metal parts were pioneered in 17-4, CoCr, and nickel alloys on 3 EOS M270s. DM was one of the first companies to change the EOS parameters to improve printability and we experimented with different cover gasses. Two of the biggest customers were GE Aviation and GE Energy. It was a colorful organization to say the least. A bitter lawsuit by the 3 owners prevented DM from being sold to a major aerospace OEM and within a couple years it was sold to RTI. Those were some strange times. Directed Manufacturing Inc. is the leader in additive manufacturing for metals and plastics for both production and prototype applications. Located in Austin, our AS9100 and ITAR certified facility can support the most demanding applications such as medical devices and aerospace components. DMI routinely works to tight customer specifications providing material traceability from the powder to the shipping container. With our multi-levels of inspection we ensure only quality components reach our customers. DMI is currently collaborating with the University of Texas at El Paso to understand the mechanisms that influence mechanical properties in laser melted alloys. Through this research we will advance the state-of-the-art in process control for metal laser melting. DMI is also active in the ASTM F42 committee, particularly in the Materials and Process F42.05 subcommittee. We believe it is through standardization that additive manufacturing will become a common and accepted manufacturing technique.
