Discovery Planet Cic

Discovery Planet is a multi-award-winning social enterprise which brings accessible enriching, creative learning experiences to the heart of our community in Thanet, East Kent. We received the Kings Award for Voluntary Service in 2025, the equivalent of an MBE. Since 2013, over visits have been made to the interactive workshops and events, which we develop in collaboration with world class research teams and businesses. As well as animating the spaces and places in which we operate, we provide a focus around which organisations and individuals can pull together to make their local area a better place. We are a grassroots organisation with a national reputation for excellence in community engagement; and over the last decade we have developed award-winning expertise in producing highly engaging STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Maths) events which overcome barriers to participation and reach an underserved audience. Over the past 10 years we have delivered activities with every school in Thanet. In 2023 we won an award for Innovation from the South East Physics Network. In 2022 we won an award from the Ogden Trust for ‘Longitudinal Projects to Widen Participation’, presented at The Royal Society. We have also won a Heart of the Community Award from Kent Media and London Array; were commended in The National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement - Images of Public Engagement Awards; been featured as an example of best practice in a book published by Imperial College; mentioned in the British Science Association’s 2018 Impact Report, and used as a case study in a paper published in Research for All.
