Districts Make The Difference

Districts Make the Difference is the public awareness campaign produced by the National Special Districts Coalition. Special districts are the most local form of government: they are community-formed, owned, and governed, and provide highly specialized services. The services provided by special districts include fire protection, water, sanitation, parks, healthcare, mosquito abatement, airports, harbors, and even cemeteries. Special districts serve millions of Americans with services that are not being met by other government agencies. Special districts have the flexibility to meet a specific need in a small community or to improve service across a large region in a cost-effective manner through specialization and economies of scale. Most special districts are independent, with dedicated local funding and an elected governing body that serves independently of other governments.
