An enormous amount of time can be lost using hit and miss interventions that are not research based or worse by just doing more of the same over and over. Sometimes dyslexia is the cause of struggling with word problems and intervention should be tailored to address that. As with most learning differences early intervention gives superior results. Dyscalculia can manifest itself as early as in KinderGarten and is unlikely to subside on its own.
