In recent years, the fashion industry became a major contributor to environmental degradation and climate change, accounting for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions (with a carbon impact of 1. 2 billion tons of CO2 eq per year according to an Oxfam study in 2020) and 20% of pollution water industry. This industry, which is heavily reliance on petroleum-based materials (with an annual consumption of 300 million barrels of oil for the production of polyester fibers), further exacerbates the situation. This environmental impact is felt disproportionately by communities in Africa, where the fashion industry is a major source of employment and income. At the same time, the Republic of Benin, the 4th largest producer of pineapples on the African continent, has a production of tons per year.
