Electrification and the switch to renewable sources are important components of the global energy transition. This brings the new challenge of intermittency. For shorter periods several options are available and affordable. However, a seasonal scale storage solution is needed for longer periods and greater volumes, especially in more moderate climate regions. Hydrogen is often proposed as a possible solution. EMMETEnergy suggests an alternative option: EMMETEnergy is developing a Power to Methane back to Power (P2M2P) system with a closed carbon loop. This is based on proven technology: a reversible Solid Oxide Cell combined with fixed-bed methanation. The methane (synthetic natural gas) is stored in the currently available storage facilities. With an estimated economical round-trip efficiency of 53%(higher technical efficiency are possible) and no need for scarce earth materials, this storage system is economically scalable to TWh scale.
