Enterprise Engineering Institute

The mission of the Enterprise Engineering Institute is to promote and guide the practical application of the emerging discipline of Enterprise Engineering, based on the Enterprise Engineering Paradigm, as postulated by the CIAO! Network This paradigm addresses the key challenges that enterprises are currently faced with. Among them are the lack of coherence and consistency between the various parts of an enterprise, whereas they need to operate as a unified and integrated whole. Another challenge is that enterprises are complex systems, prone to entropy. This means that the costs of bringing about changes become uncontrollable, whereas they should be flexible and agile. Enterprise Engineering includes (relevant parts of) management and organization science, information system science, and computer science. Managing the complexity of enterprises (and all of its parts), avoiding entropy, and achieving unity and integration requires deliberate enterprise development and governance, grounded in Enterprise Ontology (the fully implementation independent understanding of the essence of an enterprise) and Enterprise Architecture (the purposeful and normative guidance of the development process by means of design principles).
