AES is a passive, on-site treatment system designed to treat wastewater with self-colonising bacteria. This natural process occurs within aerated pipes that have been specifically designed and performance tested worldwide. These pipes are installed in a bed of sand following a standard septic tank. In its simplest form, the treated effluent is dispersed passively into the soil beneath the bed. Treated effluent can also be collected from the bed using a liner and used for sub-surface irrigation. Secondary treatment levels are obtained in just a few days from start-up and have been tested at OSET NTP to be resilient to a 100% overload with BOD 3.9 and TSS 5 and with a fast response to variable loadings in both directions. Its lightweight, adaptable and flexible components mean that AES can be easily installed at almost any location and is suitable for projects of any scale. From residential dwellings and holiday homes to commercial properties, entire communities and townships. What’s more, the standard system does not require on-going servicing, maintenance or power as it has no moving parts subject to breakdown or any electrical components. With its straightforward installation, setup costs are kept to a minimum; and don’t forget that there are no operating costs! NZ OSET NTP 2017 results show that the AES system exceeds the AS/NZ 1547 standard for secondary wastewater treatment by 10 times, making AES one of the best choices you could make when it comes to protecting the environment. The standard install provides a 3.5 log pathogen reduction and a further reduction to 7 log can be obtained by increasing the sand bed depth or by installing a lined bed and Salcor 3G UV unit to disinfect the output, with the addition of some power.
