Ethical Seafood Research
Ethical Seafood Research (ESR) is a non-profit organisation advocating for improved animal welfare in aquatic food systems globally. Registered in the UK, Spain, and Kenya, we focus on improving conditions for farmed fish in low- and middle-income countries — where aquaculture is expanding rapidly and welfare is too often overlooked. Our mission is to develop science-based, practical solutions that create win-wins for animals, farmers, markets and the environment. Acting as a global solutions broker, ESR brings together farmers, academics, veterinarians, policymakers, retailers and certification bodies to accelerate change in both farmed and wild-capture seafood sectors. Our work spans welfare assessment, capacity building, technological innovation and policy change. We train fish farmers, veterinarians and government extension officers to implement best practices in real-world conditions. ESR also engages with policymakers and supply chain actors to create incentives for higher welfare, ensuring producers who adopt better practices are supported and rewarded. Our goal is to integrate fish welfare into mainstream aquaculture by demonstrating that ethical production is not only possible, but also beneficial for farmers, markets and consumers. Our approach is pragmatic, science-driven and collaborative — ensuring that improvements are sustainable and impactful. Our vision: A seafood sector where sustainability includes the fair and humane treatment of aquatic animals — and where better welfare leads to better outcomes for all.
