The heritage of F.W. Woolworth Co. in America began with the original store founding in 1879. Through the next 100 years, Woolworth’s grew to of stores across the United States and United Kingdom. Due to rising competition, international Woolworth’s chains were slowly sold off from its parent, and became independently owned around the globe. Eventually, Woolworth stores' former parent company retired the stores to concentrate on other businesses.
