It’s 07:00 on a Monday morning and we’ll be hundreds of miles from home. Why? Enjoying the scenery is certainly part of it as is the freedom. We are often in the most spectacular areas of the UK connecting people and things. Of the inhabitants of the UK 83% choose to live in urban areas, 7% of the landmass. These areas are often well connected to the digital world by both fixed and wireless means. this is more of a challenge in remote settings and an ever pressing question for the UK Government and their counterparts in other countries. Do we accept the growing divide between those able to connect to the internet and wider computer networks and those whose experience is very much lacking. The implications for the shape of our societies is crucial, without a vision for the countryside, commercial forces as with the industrial revolution are likely to accelerate urbanisation whilst paradoxically being a technology that has the capacity to free us from spatial constraints. Building Digital UK In 2013 the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport launched the above scheme in recognition of some of the above questions. Its intention, which in detail has changed over the life of the effort, was intended to improve the digital lot of those in poor coverage areas. FBS was in part conceived to become some aspect of the solution. We built a field capability, supported by a number of connectivity options to aid businesses and residential properties with their connectivity conundrums. In doing this we have aided thousands of people achieve better connectivity and discovered many different avenues to explore. Our backgrounds have been in and around field services, the telecommunications sector, communications technology, computer networks or IT. Putting this together seemed obvious.
