The energy transition implies a tremendous increase in battery usage worldwide. Especially the use of efficient, chargeable lithium-ion energy storage systems is growing and expected to grow exponentially. Fire hazards caused by thermal runaway are limiting the wide spread implementation of lithium-ion energy storage systems. Using knowledge and experience from the most challenging industries, aviation and EV racing, FireCon aims to accelerate the energy transition by mitigating risks and losses. Nowadays lithium-ion batteries are the first choice for applications that require rechargeable batteries. In comparison with previous rechargeable energy storage systems such as lead–acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries have higher energy density, specific capacity and power density. These advantages allow batteries to support high-current usage and long-term operations. which are typical requirements for vast majority of today’s portable electronic devices. Unfortunately, lithium-ion batteries present safety concerns. If a lithium-ion energy carrier is exposed to high temperature or is short-circuited, exothermic reactions can be caused. This results in a self-enhanced increasing temperature loop known as thermal runaway and can lead to severe battery fires or even explosions. Using knowledge and experience from the most challenging fire containment industries, aviation and EV racing, FireCon aims to accelerate the energy transition by mitigating risks and losses using durable, lightweight and extremely fire-proof materials. By doing so we are determined to set PGS37 standards ensuring a green but safe future.
