Five Talents Financial was founded with the goal of assisting our clients in every aspect of their financial lives. We believe that the greatest investment risk is not losing one’s money but outliving it. This means that the only safety lies in the increase of purchasing power. An increase occurs only by having a positive return net of inflation and taxes. Therefore: the great long term risk of stocks is not owning them. On the day I was born (Ed) the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 877.62, in my lifetime it has increased over percent. Even in retirement people should own as much in equities that they are comfortable holding, and use other asset classes as a method of diversification. However, we don’t believe in individual stocks but a manages portfolio of stocks. One stock can go to zero, but the entire asset class is very unlikely to go to zero. You protect yourself by having a proactive strategy of diversification based on your goals and risk tolerances, overseen by professional management. In all our years in this business we’ve never seen anyone pick the best Large Cap stock and the best Small Cap Emerging Market stock. We know we can’t do that and still provide top notch personal service to our clients. What we can do is set up the plan, find the best money managers to be on the team, and monitor the plan to keep us on the right track. In other words, we provide focus, discipline, and clarity to the whole process without emotion.
