Flag Institute

We are a members’ association and UK-registered charity devoted to the study and promotion of flags and flag flying (vexillology). Founded in 1971, we are an independent organisation – international, inclusive and informed. We are run and funded entirely by members. We have a global membership of novices and experts, vexillologists and vexillographers, flag geeks and flag nerds for individuals, groups, and trade. We are a member of International Federation of Vexillological Associations (FIAV), are four-time host of the International Congress of Vexillology (ICV), and a global centre of excellence and knowledge hub. Our purpose is to advance public knowledge, understanding and use of flags. We do this – in person, in print and online – through our magazine called 'Flagmaster', events, library and publications by documenting, celebrating, and promoting flags in all their diversity. We are here to share knowledge, opinion, and ideas, and support the design and adoption of new flags. We also serve as the authority on flags and flag flying and offer expert comment on current and breaking news. We advise to the UK Parliament, national and local government, diplomatic services, military units and more. We manage the definitive UK Flag Registry and provide free online guidance in flag design, UK flag protocol, Union Flag or Union Jack, and more.
